For new customer, you can order .hk LOCK during your new domain registration process (NDN) on HKDNR website.

Please refer to installation user guideline here.

What do I need to do if I need to change the Name Server or Domain Host for my
domain name after using .hk LOCK?

You need to will temporarily switch off (unlock) the .hk LOCK first. Please log in your account on HKDNR panel, set an unlock period and then submit a request. .hk LOCK admin contact will receive a request email accordingly. How do I know that my domain name is subscribed to and protected by .hk LOCK?

You can search your domain name on our WHOIS. Under “Status Information” section, the “Domain Prohibit Status” should show “The domain name is protected by .hk LOCK”.

How much does .hk LOCK cost and how am I billed?

The subscription fee of .hk LOCK is HK$2,000 per domain name per annum. The annual period is the same as that for the domain name registration. If the commencement date is not on the first day of the domain name annual period of registration, the fee will be prorated by dividing the yearly fee into 365 or 366 days and the number of days will be counted from the first day you start using until the end of the annual period of the domain name registration.

For example, if the service commencement is on 15 March and the expiration of the annual period of registration is on 10 September, the .hk LOCK subscription fee for the first year would be 179/365 X HK$2000.

However, if there are less than 3 months to the end of the domain annual period of registration, you need to pay the yearly .hk LOCK subscription fee for the next annual period as well as the fee for the remaining days of first year.

What is IP address? How many types of IP address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that some electronic devices use to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP). In simpler terms, IP address is a computer address.

There are mainly two type IP addresses: IPv4 and IPv6. IPv4 (Internet Protocol version 4) is widely used on the Internet, and it uses 32 bits to represent an address. IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6), the successor of IPv4, makes use of 128 bits to represent an address instead of 32 bits. IPv6 has enough room for 3.4×1038 unique addresses.

What is DNS Zone file? What kind zone types are being used by .hk?

These are the files that contain the list of all the hosts in your domain, and their corresponding IP address. There are 13 types of zone file, which are .com.hk, .edu.hk, .org.hk, .idv.hk, .hk, .gov.hk, .net.hk, .公司.hk, .網絡.hk, .組織.hk, .教育.hk, .政府.hk, .個人.hk.

What is IPv6?

Each computer on the Internet is assigned a unique number called the IP (Internet Protocol) address. The current addressing scheme for IP addresses is called IPv4 (IP address version 4). IPv4 is 32-bit long (consisting of four 8-bit numbers separated by dots). It is expected that IPv4 addresses currently use on every device connected to the Internet would eventually run out or with very limited supply. Therefore, a new addressing scheme called IPv6 (IP address version 6) has been developed. An IPv6 address is 128 bits long (consisting of eight 16-bit numbers separated by colons).

What are the differences between IPv4 and IPv6?

Typical IPv4 IP address:
192.168.1.2 – Four groups separated by (.). Each group consists of a number ranging from 1 to 256. In theory, IPv4 can address up to 4,294,967,296 devices.

Typical IPv6 IP address:
2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 – IPv6 addresses are normally written as eight groups of four hexadecimal (0-9, a-f) digits, where each group is separated by a colon (:).IPv6 can address up to 3.403 × 1038 unique addresses.

What does IPv6 looks like in the DNS?

Take ns5.hkirc.hk as an example. When you normally look up DNS IP in IPv4 using the dig command, the IPv4 result for ns5.hkirc.hk is shown as: ns5.hkirc.hk. 300 IN A 203.119.2.22. We can notice the single “A” in the answer, which indicates it is an IPv4 address.

Doing the same with a domain name which have IPv6 address, the answer for ns2.cuhk.edu.hk: ns2.cuhk.edu.hk. 14400 IN AAAA 2405:3000:3:60::21.
The “AAAA” in the result means that this is an IPv6 address.

What service does HKIRC offer for IPv6?

HKIRC has added the capability to register Domain Name with IPv6 addresses as name servers. HKIRC DNS server can now cater for both IPv4 address and IPv6 address, even though you are using existing IPv4 network. The clients do not need to have an IPv6 network, but still can enjoy this service.

What are the changes to the existing HKIRC panels for IPv6?

There is no difference in the appearance of the HKIRC IPv6 compatible panels. The only changes are the IP entry fields and display in the panel, which now support IPv6 notation as well as new address length for IPv6. Also, additional checks are added to check for valid IPv6 format in all entry fields.

Sub-domain name is the domain name being sub-divided from the domain name registered with us. Sometimes, domain name holder may divide the domain name (example: marketing.mycompany.com.hk or mis.mycompany.com.hk) to facilitate their own use.

What is the risk if I rent a sub-domain name?

Please ensure that you understand all the risks for renting a sub-domain name before you decide to go for it. For instance, the sub-domain name will be cancelled if the host of the “.hk” second-level domain name fails to pay annual fee or breaches the Agreement, or fails in the arbitration of domain name dispute, even the sub-domain name user owes nothing to the host. Besides, it may not be easy to change a host server while you use a sub-domain name. A word of caution, we have seen problems for overseas sub-domain name holders when companies have tried to change service and find they are not the actual holder and have no control.

What is the format of sub-domain?

The format is the same as a .hk / .香港 domain name.

For English subdomain, it (1) contains 2-63 English letters, (2) may contain one or more uppercase or lowercase English letters, numbers and/or hyphens, (3) does not contain hyphens in the third and fourth character positions.

About Domain Name

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique alpha-numeric name used to locate a specific computer on the Internet.

What does it mean to “register” a .hk domain name?

To register a .hk domain name means that an individual or an organization is requesting a right to use the registered name on the Internet. The individual or organization which wishes to register this .hk domain name must accept the latest Registration Agreement set by Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (HKDNR).

What is the Hong Kong Domain Name Registration Company Limited (here after HKDNR)?

HKDNR is now the operations arm of The Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation (HKIRC) in assuming the role of both registry and registrar for the registration and assignment of Third Level Domain (“Domain Name”) under the existing Second Level Domains, namely .com.hk, .org.hk, .gov.hk, .edu.hk, .net.hk. .idv.hk, Second-Level .hk and any other categories to be introduced from time to time.

Who can register a domain name?

For .idv.hk, it is designated for Individuals aged 11 or above with HKID cards.
For a 2nd level .hk, it is designed for the registration by any legal individual or organizational entity (either local or overseas)
For the 3rd level .hk, it is designed for any organization legally present in HK.

How long does the registration process take?

Registration processing time will depend on your completeness of the application and our verification action.

For example, for 3rd level .hk, we shall process your registration upon receipt of your: (i) copy of the document(s) and (ii) applicable registration fee. Once we have received and verified all the required document(s), you will receive email notifications notifying results of your application within 1 working day. However, for an incomplete case, an email reminder will be sent on the 14th calendar day after receiving your application to notify you of the outstanding items. The application will be cancelled if all the required items are still not received within 10 calendar days.

I don’t know a thing about the Internet, can I let my Internet Service Provider (ISP) handle everything in my domain name application?

Yes, but bear in mind that your ISP is performing the registration on behalf of you; therefore, you are the one who will be bound by the terms and conditions of the latest HKDNR Registration Agreement. You are also agreed to be responsible for any errors made by the Agent. So, please make sure all information provided by your ISP is correct and accurate in order to avoid any discrepancies found.

Since you may change your ISP, we advise you to have your contact information as the Domain’s Administrative Contact so that we can keep you informed of any issues related to your domain name.

I am an individual and do not have a company. Can I register a domain name?

Yes. Starting from 21 Feb 2003, any Hong Kong Identity Card Holder aged 11 or above may apply for individual domain names (.idv.hk) at https://www.hkdnr.hk. For individuals from overseas, please consider registering a Second-Level ‘.hk’ domain name, which accepts applications of organizations and individuals from both local and overseas.

I am not yet online. I want to register a domain name first, then subscribe to an ISP later. Can I reserve a domain name first?

YES! You can register a domain name first and HKDNR may provide temporary name servers for you until your designated name server records are available.

Once the website content or web-hosting service is ready, you can update the name server details temporarily provided by HKDNR by proceeding with an “Modify Name Server (MNS)” application at the HKDNR panel.

An email notification will be sent to the domain’s Administrative Contact and the Technical Contact once receiving the MNS application, and the modification will be activated on the same day.

I noticed that my desired domain name is unavailable. What should I do?

Registration of domain name is on a first-come, first-served basis, if your desired domain name is registered, you can consider trying another favorite domain name.

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is used to query the information of a domain such as domain holder, contact details and its expiry date.

How to search for an available domain?

Entry your deserved domain name in HKDNR front page,
choose domain extension ( .hk | .com.hk |edu.hk etc), click SEARCH

I want to check the contact information of a .hk domain name owned by an EU citizen/organization, but the information on WHOIS is hidden. How can I get such information?

This arrangement only responds to the GDPR requirement. If you have any doubt on the Registrant Contact Information, please feel free to contact the relevant registrar for details. The registrar may pass your contact information to the relevant domain contact person and s/he can decide how to follow up. You can find the registrar’s contact information by looking up WHOIS

Can I request to hide the holder name or other contact information of my domain name in WHOIS?

The Registry has the responsibility to allow the public to access some of the Registrant’s details for the purpose of obtaining information about the Domain Name registration (e.g. identifying the holder before filing a dispute complaint, or if the domain is being maliciously registered) or any other related purpose.

Hope you understand the holder name could not be hidden. We would suggest modifying the contact information (e.g. changing the email address or other contact information) to what you are comfortable with.

Where can I check a domain name’s expiry date?

Visit HKDNR.HK website
Go to WHOIS, enter domain name, and click “Search”
Click “Display”, then you can see its “Expiry Date”

How can I know the status of my new domain name registration? When will the domain name be effective?

You (domain registrant, admin, technical and billing contacts) will receive a system-generated email confirmation a few hours after domain approval by HKDNR. Usually, we will take 1-2 days to approve a new registration on the condition that all required documents are submitted for verification.

How long will the domain be made available for registration again after deletion?

After the domain is deleted or when it is not renewed, it will enter a 60-day Blackout Period. During that period the domain is neither resolvable nor available for registration. Under normal circumstances, the domain will be open for registration again right after the Blackout Period.
